What to check before booking a hotel with EV charging in India

Updated

By the Book EV Hotels team

Before you book a hotel for an EV trip in India, check that it has a proper charger rather than a plug point, what type and power it is, whether guests or anyone can use it. Book EV Hotels shows these details on each hotel's page, confirmed with the hotel by phone.

Why can't I rely on the EV charging filter on booking sites?

On most hotel booking sites, "EV charging" is a box the hotel ticks itself, and it often stays ticked after a charger breaks or turns out to be a regular plug point. That's why Book EV Hotels confirms every charger with the hotel by phone before listing it.

Where can I check a hotel's charger before booking?

On Book EV Hotels, each hotel's page shows the charger details our team has confirmed with the hotel by phone:

  • Charger type, and its power wherever we've confirmed it, such as a 7.4 kW or 22 kW AC charger or a DC fast charger.
  • Whether it's open to the public or for guests only, which matters if you're stopping for a meal rather than a night.
  • How many chargers the hotel has, so you know whether you might have to wait for one to become available.

What charger power do I need to charge overnight?

A 7.4 kW AC charger is enough to fully charge most EVs overnight. A typical 52 kWh battery takes about eight hours from nearly empty at 7.4 kW, which is why 7.4 kW is the minimum for a listing on Book EV Hotels.

Will a 22 kW charger charge my car faster?

Only if your car can accept it. On AC charging, the car's onboard charger sets the limit, and most EVs sold in India accept between 3.3 kW and 11 kW. A car limited to 7.2 kW charges at 7.2 kW even on a 22 kW charger. DC fast chargers of 50 kW or more bypass that limit and can take a typical car from 10% to 80% in about an hour or less.

What if the hotel only has a regular plug point?

A regular 15 or 16 amp plug point charges at around 3 kW, so a full charge can take 16 to 18 hours or more, and you should only use one the hotel confirms is suitable for EV charging. Hotels offering only a regular plug point aren't listed on Book EV Hotels.

Chargers do occasionally go out of service, so if your trip depends on one, a quick call to the hotel on the day you travel is worth it.
